“Becoming a parent has been an invitation to leave behind everything I thought I knew, and go on an adventure into the unknown. As an artist, that’s just about the greatest gift you can have. These songs feel like they are a map for the next phase of my life.”

-Michael Simic on Caravan Songs

Name, Title

While his long term band Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, Michael Simic rebirths his solo career with his album Caravan Songs, his first release under his given name.

Becoming a father in 2019, Simic went from full time international touring artist to stay at home dad and it has led to a songwriting renaissance.

Living in a converted church with his wife and child in the tiny New South Wales village of Majors Creek, Simic has developed a new relationship to the music that he makes. Walking through the garden at night and stepping into his caravan has become an evening ritual. Sitting at his desk, lighting the candles, picking up his guitar and writing intuitively; sensual, sultry, rhythmic songs; aching, heartfelt lullabies; bright songs of hope and wonder unfurling under the starry sky.

From hundreds of recordings on his phone from 2019-20, Simic recorded dozens of demos at Old Binda Road Recording Studios in Crookwell, NSW with composer and producer Stephen Lindsay. From May last year, until early this year, the pair have worked intensively together to produce the eight lush and evocative tracks that make up Caravan Songs. Simic says:

“Becoming a parent has been an invitation to leave behind everything I thought I knew, and go on an adventure into the unknown. As an artist, that’s just about the greatest gift you can have. These songs feel like they are a map for the next phase of my life.”

Produced by Michael Simic and engineered by Stephen Lindsay, with additional mixing by Kimmo Vennonen, Caravan Songs will initially be released exclusively on Bandcamp through Lindsay’s Oceanic Records label and Simic’s own new boutique label, Why-How-What.

For the first run of launch shows, Michael Simic has put together a 5-piece band to bring the album to life on stage. The shows will be opened by another Oceanic Records artist, promising sixteen year old Goulburn singer-songwriter Isy Cappo, who will be joined by her band. Cappo sang most of the harmony vocals on Caravan Songs, and will also join Simic’s band for their set for all the launch shows.
